Chatting to Lisa McCabe

IN!magazine have just announced their 2012 IN! Glamour awards with a number of categories including Best breakthrough designer with nominations for Riona Treacy, Shauna Fay, Lisa McCabe, John Paul Deehan, Zoe Boomer, Ruedi Maguire, Susan Black and Grainne Maher. We’ve got to say, that’s one impressive list and already you should have become aware of most of these nominees.

Right in the middle of a hectic schedule, we managed to get a quick chat with one of the breakthrough designers, Lisa McCabe, of Nor Lisa.

Since graduating from the University of Ulster in 2011, Lisa has worked tirelessly and enthusiastically on building the successful Nor Lisa label, which has already been featured on the catwalk for two seasons at Belfast FASHIONWEEK as well as being worn on the red carpet by singing sensation Niamh Perry and modelled by Britain’s Next Top Model finalist Diona Doherty. As well as designing and making the clothes in the collection, Lisa often designs the prints and hand prints many of the fabrics herself, so no two pieces of printed fabric clothing are the same.

We chatted to Lisa as she was making final preparations on a number of projects for West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK. Lisa talks about her inspirations, her aspirations and gives us a hint at what to expect in her Spring Summer 2013 collection

Who was your inspiration to become a designer and what is it that makes them an inspiration?

To pick one person would be very difficult indeed, I am inspired by so many things never mind people! Beyonce and Dita Von Teese inspire me as I love their style and glamour, but my two sisters inspire me every single day. Designers like Versace, Chanel and Vivienne Westwood and movies such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspire me, I could go on and on.

Running your own business can be very full on, but we all need some ‘me’ time. What is ‘me’ time for you?

‘Me time’ for me would be when I spend time with my lovely family, boyfriend or doggy! Though I never really switch off and my Ipad is stuck to my hand.

Going forward into your SS13 collection, can you let us in on any secrets of what to expect?

I have so many ideas running around my head I haven’t decided which one’s to select, but let’s just say they will be show stopping, floaty and with a return of the spitfire which is my signature symbol of course.

You have already had great success as a designer. Is there a plan or a dream of where you want to be in a few years?

My dream has always been to own my own boutique and if I achieve that by the time I am 30 I will be very happy.
If I could dress a few celebs along the way that would be a bonus! Beyonce is my idol for life, so if I ever dress her I will die happy!

IN!magazine breakthrough designer award? How exciting! If you did win, where would keep the award?

Very exciting indeed! Even to be nomationed is such a massive privilege especially as my brand is only a year old. Though it was a year of constant hard work to be fair. I never thought of where I would keep it? Probably in my mummy and daddy’s house in Enniskillen as I know they would love to show it off.

Huge thanks to Lisa for taking time out of her day to answer a few questions, and we wish her the best of luck in the awards.
