Dublin on Arthur’s Day

It’s quite amazing for a day created by Guinness only a few years ago, but Arthur’s Day is getting bigger each year and is BIG business for the company. It’s quite simply, genius marketing!

This year we headed into Dublin to join the craziness. And it was just that…crazy! One wrong turn into Dame Lane and we got caught up right in the centre of manicness. If you were at Culture Night in Belfast and thought Hill Street was busy, well multiply that by a few times and you’ll get the picture.

We were actually in the City to see Darren Hayes (of Savage Garden) play in Vicar Street. What a great live performer, with charisma, stage presence and like-ability, I guess he’s got the X-factor.

Even Darren (yes, we’re on first name terms!) mentioned Arthur’s Day. He thought it was a Saint Arthur celebration originally, but realised that we were really a bunch of pissheads ready to party!

It was all a bit like the MTV awards weekend, with music stars popping up all over the place, but this time, all over Ireland.

There were surprise popup gigs from Mumford & Sons, Professor Green, Example, Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Fatboy Slim.

Ellie Goulding was part of a TV Special in Cork’s Crane Lane, while Mika did a unique performance of some of his songs with Dublin Gospel Choir in Market Bar, Dublin.

Tinie Tempah played to a surprised audience in Whites Tavern, Belfast

Texas surprised locals with an early performance in Smyth’s Bar, Denmark Street, Limerick before heading for a late gig in well known live music pub Monroes in Galway city

The Coronas played a surprise gig in Geary’s Bar, Charleville, Co Cork

Fun Lovin’ Criminals turned up for a rocking performance at Kazbar in Waterford City

Mumford & Son’s performed to a packed Toner’s pub, Baggot Street, Dublin

Primal Scream turned up at The Silver Granite, Palmerstown, Dublin

Mika showed up at The Graduate, Dun Laoighaire, Dublin

We were on the guest list for Dakota Bar in Dublin, to see Example perform, but the place was so mobbed, the bar shut down its guest list by 6.30pm!

Anyway, it was a fantastic night had by all, including Darren Hayes, who walked right past us the next morning while we were checking out of the fab Gibson Hotel! See…we only stay where the stars stay!… lolol
