The countdown to the World Police and Fire Games is really picking up pace now with only 100 days to go. As the start date grows closer so the numbers of athletes registering are increasing on a daily basis. There are currently over 7,000 competitors registered from 54 countries showing a rise of over 1,200 in the last four weeks.
John Tully, Chief Executive 2013 WPFG explains, “The build up to the 1st August is really gathering momentum now and we are delighted with the marked increase in athlete numbers which have also been boosted by competitors from an additional four countries in the last few days. We are also very pleased with the response from corporate NI which is providing financial and in-kind support for the Games to the value of £1.5m exceeding our target of £1.4m. 2013 WPFG aims to deliver the friendliest Games ever and we are confident that that goal will be achieved which will not only make a significant contribution to the local economy but also positively enhance Northern Ireland’s image worldwide as an excellent host for major events.”
Belfast Lord Mayor, Alderman Gavin Robinson, said excitement across the city and beyond is really building. “Our city is looking forward to showcasing all that it has to offer and to extending the hospitality and welcome for which we have become famous worldwide. Our venues across Belfast are gearing up to host what is one of the largest global sporting events. This is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to experience our world class facilities, and I am delighted that the economic benefits for Belfast and further afield will be enormous”.
As of today (23rd April) 4,348 athletes have registered with another 2706 in the pipeline totalling 7,054. Pipeline registrations are team members whose captains have already registered. 54 countries are represented with 35% of those registered coming from USA, Canada and Australia.
2013 WPFG Ltd was tasked with finding sponsorship in cash and in kind to the value of £1.4m. The current total stands at £1.5m which includes Platinum Sponsors – Food NI; Translink; Fujitsu; Kukri; Diageo; Coca Cola Hellenic Bottling Ltd; Danske Bank; Deloitte.
