World-renowned opera singer to perform at Walled City Music Festival

World-renowned opera singer to perform with Ulster Orchestra as part of Walled City Music Festival this June

The Walled City Music Festival has announced a fantastic line-up for their closing gala concert for this year’s chamber music festival, taking place from 31 May – 4 June. Leading Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman will close the 9th Walled City Music Festival alongside Co-Artistic Director and pianist Cathal Breslin and the Ulster Orchestra, for an exciting programme featuring the different musical styles of Verdi, Mahler, Berlioz, Borodin and Rachmaninov.

Measha has emerged as one of the most magnificent performers and vibrant personalities of our time, performing in the world’s greatest halls as both an opera singer and a concert artist, including singing to 3.2 billion viewers worldwide at the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada. Artistic Director of the Festival and fellow performer, Cathal Breslin, born in Derry, has been praised worldwide as one of the most exciting pianists of his generation with critical acclaim such as “superb intensity and passion” (Cleveland Plain Dealer), “energized and energizing” (Belfast Telegraph) and “a deep connection to the music” (Tampa Oracle). Both artists will perform alongside the region’s premier symphony orchestra in a rousing closing gala concert in the Millenium Forum.

Matthew Greenall, Executive Director of Walled City Music said, “We’re very happy to be promoting the festival’s very first orchestral concert, in company with the Ulster Orchestra, and also to present one of the world’s outstanding voices in Measha Brueggergosman, a truly superb talent. Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto is one of the great romantic works, and we are greatly looking forward to the performance by our Artistic Director, Cathal Breslin. This concert is certain to be one of the musical highlights of the year in Derry.”

The Walled City Music Festival will take place from 31 May to 4 June in venues including The Glassworks, Cultúrlann, Millennium Forum and Ulster University Magee and tickets are now available via the Millennium Forum Box Office or online at
