Ulster Museum offers a Tasty Prehistoric Feast for the Senses
National Museums NI presents a night at the Ulster Museum like no other as ‘A Taste of Prehistory’ plans to tantalise 21st century taste buds. In partnership with the NI Science Festival, the event will have guests travelling back in time for dinner, to 8000BC – 400AD for a culinary experience inspired by ingredients found in Ireland in Prehistoric times.
Devised by National Museums NI’s Curator of Archaeology, Dr Greer Ramsey, the event is a Prehistoric three course dinner created by Yellow Door chef Himanshu Sabarwal. Examples of ingredients include salmon, a fish caught by our original Mesolithic hunter gatherers ancestors and a pork inspired dish, the favourite meat of the great Iron Age warrior Cúchulainn. The meal finishes off with a prehistoric fruit and nut dessert.
The evening will be hosted by acclaimed broadcaster, writer and scientist Professor Alice Roberts. Guests will hear the call of ancient musical horns played at feasts before dinner. They will begin the evening wandering around the history galleries at the Ulster Museum where they can enjoy a variety of demonstrations such as grinding corn on a Bronze Age quern, discover how to make ancient pots and see some of the tools and weapons our forefathers used to survive.
National Museum NI, Curator of Archaeology, Dr Greer Ramsey, said “A Taste of Prehistory is a unique opportunity for people to understand how our ancestors survived by sourcing food from the wild Irish landscape thousands of years ago. What better way to learn about Prehistoric diets than through an excellent three course dinner; carefully curated by Yellow Door in the unique surroundings of the Ulster Museum where our ancient Irish collections are housed?”
Professor Alice Roberts commented “I’m really looking forward to coming back to the wonderful NI Science Festival. I love this festival – it brings the city alive with ideas and events. I’m particularly looking forward to the Taste of Prehistory event on Friday evening at the Ulster Museum, when I’ll be hosting a magnificent feast with an enticing ancient menu. And between courses, there’ll also be the chance to dig into some of the science which helps to reveal the diets and lifestyles of our ancestors.”
