Mount Stewart is one of the many National Trust’s gems in Northern Ireland.
The recently extended demesne overlooks Strangford Lough a few miles south of Newtownards on the inner shore of the Ards Peninsula.
Mount Stewart House
Bought by the Stewart family in 1744, Mount Stewart house is a Neo-Classical treasure for the National Trust. A recent £8million refurbishment restored the house back to how it looked when it was home to the 7th Marchioness Edith, Lady Londonderry.
The House is open from 11am for guided tours which will run every 30mins. At 1pm the house will be open for free flow tours – the last entry to the house being at 4.30pm. On busy days (eg Mother’s Day, Open Day, Jazz Sundays, Easter Sunday, Monday, Tuesday) the house will be Free Flow Only.

Mount Stewart Gardens
The gardens created for Edith, Lady Londonderry have been voted in the top 10 Gardens in the world. They have a strong Mediterranean feel and due to the micro climate on the estate there are unique and experimental planting’s throughout the grounds, including a new area to grow South African plants.
There are a number of garden styles surrounding the house including the Sunk Garden, Italian Garden, Shamrock Garden, Spanish Garden and Mairi Garden.
Find out more about each garden here.
Walks on the estate
There are a number of trails at Mount Stewart which already provide plenty to do and there are brand new trails opening this Easter in the extended estate. The Lake Walk is the what we would say is the traditional trail around the lake, but make sure you try the Red Squirrel Trail, and hopefully you’ll come across one of the resident squirrels.
Make sure you head over in the direction of the Temple of the Winds and the new trails around that side of the estate.
Ask at reception when you arrive.
