Things we loved about Cuffs at @crumlinroadgaol

Crumlin Road Gaol continues to evolve and grow with a multitude of activities inside the beautiful Lanyon designed exterior. The latest reason to visit the Gaol is Cuffs, their recently opened Bar & Grill restaurant. I’d bet you didn’t even know there was a restaurant there, and not just the cafe, a proper bar|grill.

Set underneath the building in a beautiful  contemporary room with a unique arched ceiling, Cuffs was a surprise. The restaurant makes the best possible use of its space underneath the gaol. With contemporary decor, comfortable seating and unique light fixtures, Cuffs is not what we expected, it’s so much better.

The menu is classic bar grill, it’s not pretending to be all fancy, it just is what it is, and that’s my kind of meal!

I chose peppered beef brisket and triple cooked chips off the specials menu at £9.50. The beef just fell apart; it was to tender and tasty. The other main was an 8oz steak long stretch burger and duck fat cooked chips for £10.50. It was interesting to compare the triple cooked chips with the duck fat chips; both delicious with very different tastes and textures.

Desserts were Classic lemon tart with raspberry, and White chocolate and black cherry trifle. The lemon tart was perfect, but I thought the trifle had a touch too much alcohol in it. I think I should’ve gone with my first choice, the chocolate and blueberry sponge pudding; next time!

It was great to be served down to earth food and to enjoy lovely surroundings with a great team. Who would’ve ever thought Crumlin Road Gaol would have a such a welcoming bar|grill!

Go try. We loved it, and plan to go back!

PS… if I had to make a small change, I’d revisit the cocktail menu and inject some fun into it by renaming the cocktails with references to the gaol.
