Tasting The Birdcage Stay Bar menu

It’s always good to turn up at a restaurant with no expectations, having not read any reviews or talked to anyone who had ever been. That’s exactly what happened when we spent a Saturday evening at The Birdcage in Stranmillis.

Arriving in this little restaurant, you’re immediately struck by it’s artwork, and Mexican Day of the Dead theme. Surprisingly the art has been painted by the Italian barman Marco, who with the influence of his South American girlfriend, has created some great art for the restaurant.

The Birdcage continues to expand and evolve on Stranmillis Road, this time with a new bar area where you can enjoy some pretty awesome cocktails while eating from their new Stay Bar menu of small plates, pecks and tacos . And what small plates they are as well! Just delicious! At £3 a plate or 3 for £8 it’s great value without compromising on taste.

I loved the Chorizo in red wine and thyme,  and the hummus with munch bread.

Pecks are bigger portions between £5.95 and £7.95. The baked flatbread with rocket, 3 cheeses and avocado was delicious, as were the arancini risotto balls.

And let’s not forget about the chocolate trio dessert. I’m getting peckish now just thinking about it all.

We pretty much ate our way down the menu, trying as much as we could squeeze in while drinking enormous cocktails from the biggest jam jars.

The cool music and funky decor in the Birdcage, along with the great team, super food and awesome cocktails is worth trying. And we have already booked our return visit to take some friends along to experience one of the best restaurant vibes in the city. I only had one problem with my Birdcage experience, and that was why hadn’t I been there before now?!?! What have I been missing out on?

Thanks to Bonnie for inviting us along for the night to experience The Birdcage.
