The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee – A Tony award winning musical reaches Belfast 11 years after it all started in its original incarnation as C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E
It’s been off-broadway, on Broadway, and around the world, but now we can say it’s been to Belfast.
We were invited along to tweet live during the first preview performance of Spelling Bee, so off we went with fully charged mobiles and ready to tweet.
The night kicks off with 4 audience members being recruited in the MAC foyer to be extras on stage. And immediately I like it, as it’s refreshing to see the audience getting the choice to participate rather than being selected anonymously. Less pressure, more fun.
It’s easy to see why this fun little musical is an award winner and world traveled. This BRUISER production pulls out all the stops with a superb cast, who deliver a performance worthy of Broadway or the West End.
Tweeting from the audience was such a cool idea by The Mac, and of course, I was in my element being allowed to use my phone during the show. We were pretty much up on the back row, so our bright mobile screens didnt really disturb anyone behind us, and, the best part was that we were allowed to take photos.
Spelling Bee at The Mac is definitely a childish quirky sentimental and fun musical with a good score and an unlikely story based on a spelling competition. The story takes you through the lives of the kids, with all their issues and idiosyncrasies. I was smiling right from the start and left with a silly old grin on my face. There is also a suprise guest star in the second half, he’s almost controversial, but definitley fun. It’s not ‘Glee’ like as the promotional literature says, and the first half with the audience participation is definitely the better half, but it is fun and worth seeing during its run until 4th May in The Mac.
Another superb BRUISER production!!
