Santa stop here! City Hall dome becomes flashing beacon #BelfastLightsAtNight

Santa Claus will have no problem finding Belfast this Christmas after it was announced that the dome of City Hall is to become a flashing beacon of light on Christmas Eve!

The iconic dome will turn into a flashing red siren for five minutes, every hour on the hour, as the countdown to Christmas morning begins, and to remind kids that Santa and his sleigh are on their way.

Currently, there is a colourful, hourly Christmas lights show with City Hall washed in a myriad of colours as Belfast celebrates the festive season.

The state-of-the-art floodlighting system installed at City Hall earlier this year, has enabled Belfast’s most recognisable building to become washed in a variety of colours to mark particular days throughout the year, as well as for charity events.

It’s also been revealed that the building’s dome will help ring in the new year with a ‘light countdown’. On New Year’s Eve the building will give a one minute warning to midnight with flashing domes, and then flash for the 10 second countdown. The building will then be lit up in vibrant rainbow colours for the first 10 minutes of 2014.

Members of the public can share their photos on social media with the hashtag #BelfastLightsAtNight.

The low-energy LED lights which have been installed on the façade, main dome and turrets of City Hall, are helping to reduce Belfast City Council’s energy bills as well as reducing the building’s CO2 emissions.

The lights use the same technology as other iconic buildings around the world including the Empire State Building in New York.
