RISE, one of our favourite Belfast landmarks, has been highly commended at the national Structural Steel Design Awards, which were held in London last week. The 2 globes have had a mixed reaction in Belfast, but we think it’s a magnificent landmark, especially at night.
The 37.5 metre high sculpture was one of 29 projects shortlisted for the prestigious annual industry awards.
RISE was in some stellar company as winners included the Peace Bridge in Derry/Londonderry, the Olympic Stadium, and the new Velodrome in London.
It was also one of only 2 projects commended outside England, and was described as “a stunning and popular landmark”.
I have discovered a few facts about the ‘Balls on the Falls’. Unbelievably it’s twice the height of Gateshead’s ‘Angel Of The North’, 3 metres taller than the Albert Clock and just 8.5 metres shorter than the Statue Of Liberty.
Congrats to all involved in the design and construction of this huge piece of art, it’s yet another reason why it’s Our Time Our Place!
