Reviewed: Punkrock at the Lyric Theatre

photo 4Punkrock is the latest play to reach the Lyric Theatre and this education focused production arrives just in time for exam results season and just before schools return for the new year.

Set in the old school library and preparing for their A levels, the group of sixth formers are experiencing a world of pressure, bullying, stress, passion, lust and troubling thoughts. There’s the new girl, the ‘Harry Styles’ type heart-throb, best friends, bullying, body dysmorphia, mental issues and insecurities. It’s got the works!

It’s a drama about school, relationships, home, ambition, optimism, and violence. It’s a drama about teenagers and it oozes teenage energy, spark, excitement and fear. It’s exciting, loud, tense, shocking and up there with one of the best plays I’ve ever seen in the Lyric.

The young cast just grab your attention from its explosive start to its even more explosive end. With acting this good and intense, the most surprising fact is that for the majority of the cast, it’s their first professional stage debut. Now that’s amazing!

Highly recommended.
