For the last 10 weeks, a group of Northern Irish students have been given a unique opportunity to submit design proposals for the use of a prime 40,000 square feet retail unit in Victoria Square.
Yes, you read that right, 40,000 square feet! That’s one big unit..and it’s tucked in under the Anne Street entrance into Victoria Square..who knew?! The unit is currently unoccupied and owners, Commerz Real, are giving the next generation of Northern Ireland’s architects the chance to design proposals to figure out how to best use the space.
The ‘Reface the Base’ student design competition opened to enterprising students studying in the Faculty of Art, Design and the Built Environment at the University of Ulster in June. For the last 10 weeks, the students have been working on designs, and on the 3rd September the competition closes. The following week on the 11th September, the winner will be announced at an award ceremony in the basement, before putting the proposals on display in Victoria Square.
The prize for the winning group is a £1000 Victoria Square Gift Card each, with the design featuring in one of the UK’s professional architect journals. Each participating student will also receive a £100 Victoria Square Gift Voucher for taking part in the competition.
In these last few days of the final preparations, no doubt the students will be feeling the pressure, but we look forward to seeing the results of all their hard work in the next couple of weeks.
