I will have my ear to the ground (quite literally) to keep you up to date about the new or interesting products and services from our neck of the woods. I’m very fond of the saying ‘Do one thing every day that scares you’ so with this in mind, I thought I would investigate a few new challenges this week. I must hold my hands up and say that the list of things I’m afraid of is pretty long, so I knew it wouldn’t be too difficult to find ideas to complete the brief.

I stumbled across a relatively new local company called Firewalking Ireland (www.firewalkingireland.com) that caters for the slightly more adventurous types. It is a mobile service that is run by charismatic entrepreneur, Stephen Brown. He has worked in the adventure industry for more than 20 years and his passion is getting people to try things outside their comfort zones. Each event he provides is bespoke to the client and he works with every participant as an individual, even if they are booked as part of a group.

Stephen has grown and adapted the business to not only cater for Firewalking, but also other challenge events such as Glass Walking, Board Breaking, Rebar Bending, and Arrow Snapping. The events are for personal and team development for corporate days out, as well as for individuals – and he has also just launched a ‘Walk Over Hot Coals’ challenge for stag parties.

The Firewalking Ireland team are passionate about providing events that are memorable and life changing for all the participants. The activities are great metaphors for learning about moving beyond our comfort zones, the everyday challenges we face and fears that hold us back. Each participate relates the experience to their own life, whether that’s home life, social life or work life.

Another part of the business is providing these activities as Fundraising events for charities. To date Firewalking Ireland has worked with a variety of Charities in Northern Ireland and Ireland including PIPS, FASA, Cancer Focus, Bumbleance (part of Saoirse Foundation) and NI Hospice.

Next Saturday (24 May), the team are working in partnership with Cancer Focus to raise much needed funds for this local charity. The event kicks off from 2pm at Cutters Wharf, Belfast and Stephen and the team will psych the participants for a walk across a fiery bed of red hot burning coals.

Registration for the firewalk is only £25 with the minimum sponsorship set at £125. If you would like to sign up, contact the fundraising team on 028 9066 3281 or email fundraising@cancerfocusni.org or www.cancerfocusni.org.

The Firewalking slot is 8.30pm but there will be lots happening during the day including live music, face painting and a BBQ.

If you can’t make next Saturday but still want would like to give it a go, there will be other events taking place throughout the summer. I’ll be there however (with the fire extinguisher at the ready) and am thinking that if I can withstand temperatures soaring above 500° Celsius, next time round I might even be holding a wee furry spider or jumping out of a plane! Hmm…. maybe it’s best to take this new adventurous me one hot coal at a time!
