On the sunniest day so far this season at Henry Jones’ Field, the Belfast Northstars ‘B’ team would continue their hot streak, crushing three home runs on the day to power them to two victories against the Dublin Spartans.
Melvyn Woods would take the hill for the first game and would throw yet another impressive outing (6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER) that would include zero walks and eleven strikeouts. The game would remain tight until the bottom of the sixth inning when Darwin Sanchez, Stuart Fraser and Woods would all cross the plate, giving Belfast a 6-3 lead into the top of the seventh. Woods would hand the ball to Gord Cuthbert who would successfully save the game, 6-4 the final. The bat of Chris Stange would remain hot, with two hits in the game.
In the second game, the Northstars could show their depth of pitching by giving the ball to Mark Smith. Fighting control issues and walking seven, Smith would still throw a complete game with 6 hits, 5 runs (1 ER) and striking out fourteen, giving the Stars ample chance to take the game.
Not content with his pitching performance in the first game, Melvyn Woods would send one out of Henry Jones’ Field in the bottom of the first – that wouldn’t be the only maroon and gold home run during the game.
Impressive newcomer Sean McMahon would go to deep left centre for a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth and Smith would join in in the bottom of the sixth to put the game well beyond reach of the Spartans.
As well as the big hits, the Stars were able to benefit from savvy baserunning and flat out speed from their new players to move to 10-0 on the year. They will look forward to a weekend off to rest arms and bodies before travelling to Dublin on the 28th June to take on the Dublin Hurricanes in a top of the table clash.
