In what is becoming a frustratingly regular pattern, the Belfast Northstars left another comeback too late and too short as they fell 8-5 to the Dublin Spartans. The result dropped the Northstars ‘A’ team to 4-7 and although that result, should the league finish today, may be sufficient to qualify the Belfast team for the postseason, there is no room for complacency with the Black Sox and Tigers within touching distance and the Mariners close behind.
The Spartans would send their veteran ace Scott Karnes to the mound were he would throw another solid performance (9.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 9 K). Melvin Woods would take the bump for the Stars and throw 5 innings of 4 run ball with only one of them earned. And despite the Belfast team plating four runs in the last three innings, they again came up short on the day, losing 8-5.
Another trip to Dublin beckons this weekend where the Stars will face down the as-still undefeated Dublin Hurricanes. Having already dropped two games this season to the formidable league leaders, the Stars will be looking to climb back to .500 ball.
In the first game, Jon Carter would match up against William Pena but despite a 2-RBI performance from Colin Woods, the Hurricanes would counter with Thomas Kelley, Patrick Cooley and Jesus Ramirez driving in two runs each to stake the Hurricanes to a 7-4 victory.
Cooley would have a bigger hand in the second game, taking the hill and striking out fourteen in a 2-hit shutout performance. On the other side of the ball, Cooley would also send a home run out of Henry Jones’ field in the fourth inning.
The Northstars will be looking to bolster their position in the Baseball Ireland league standings in Dublin.
