You may remember a while ago we mentioned the start of the Name that Bridge competition (here.)
Well the names are in and the final vote is about to begin to name the new footbridge in Victoria Park which will connect the park to Airport Road.
The bridge will provide a much needed connection to finally open up access to the Harbour Estate and Titanic Quarter from Victoria Park.
The ‘Name the Bridge’ competition had a fantastic response, and the panel of judges have narrowed it down to five:
You can view the iconic Harland and Wolff cranes, Samson and Goliath, from the new bridge as well as hope to see a bird also called a crane.
2.Sam Thompson Bridge
East Belfast man, trade unionist, playwright and he worked in the Shipyard. He also wrote the play ‘Over the Bridge’.
3. The Island Bridge
The Bridge will link Victoria Park to Airport Road and subsequently to Queen’s Island. The central part of the park is also an island.
4.Victoria (Vicky) Bridge
Reflects the park’s name and location, which is often referred to locally as ‘Vicky Park’.
The word ‘Avalon’ means ‘mythical island’. This word also has links to east Belfast’s Van Morrison who has an album ‘Avalon Sunset’. This album includes the track ‘Orangefield’ which is also on the CCG route.
It is now up to the public to make the very important decision on the name of the bridge.
