Written by and starring Caroline Curran and Julie Maxwell as sisters Mags and wee Mary, My Big Fat Belfast Christmas is a hilarious fun night out at the Theatre at the Mill in Mossley.
This was our first visit to the Theatre at the Mill, and apart from almost getting lost on our way there, the theatre was a very pleasant surprise and no doubt we’ll be back again. But the big surprise was this Christmas comedy written by the star of 50 Shades of Red, White and Blue, Caroline Curran, and Julie Maxwell.
My Big Fat Belfast Christmas has everything you need for a great night out to start getting festive this year. The Norn Iron comedy is spot on, with Caroline firing out the comedy moments right from the start and the audience loved it.
The family are facing their first Christmas without granny, and Ma Mary is taking on the roll of organising Christmas Dinner. There are secrets, surprises and touching moments of melancholy, there’s the local references with even Pamela Ballantine getting a mention, there’s the hot guy who takes his top off to raise temperatures in the audience, and there’s the big finale when everyone lays their cards on the table with, of course, hilarious consequences.
We loved the uncomfortableness of the first time the family meet Youcef, we loved Ma Mary and Da Joe’s love for each other but also their life changing secrets, we loved the Xmas visitors played by Caroline, actually we just loved it all!
I think we’ll remember My Big Fat Belfast Christmas as one of the highlights of our 2015 Christmas nights out.
And maybe for and extra special treat, they are holding a special New Years Eve performance with some of the cast partying after the show to welcome in 2016.
