Movie review: Whiplash

IMG_4515-0.JPGThe Golden Globe winning, Oscar and BAFTA nominated Whiplash is currently wowing critics and audiences globally.

This powerful movie is about a first year college student who makes it onto the prestigious school band. The band is managed by a tyrant of a teacher who believes verbal and physical abuse achieves greatness.

Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons play the student and teacher with so much passion it’s utterly mesmerising. Watch out for the slapping scene, it’s real!

There are so many twists and turns, and with one unexpected event where we just jumped out of our seats in disbelief at what had happened and over the next few minutes as the scene unfolded to a completely unbelievably passionate and anxious conclusion.

I rooted for the teacher whose not very pc teaching methods drove the students to achieve perfection, and I rooted for the students who tried and tried to achieve that perfection to varying degrees of success.

It doesn’t happen often, but I walked out of the cinema buzzing with adrenaline, emotion and excitement that I had just seen a masterpiece in moviemaking. It was passionate, powerful, intense and awesome!!
