Mamma Mia arrived back at the Odyssey Arena this week for a short run.
Abba fans have probably already seen the show on its previous visit, or watched the movie, but Mamma Mia doesn’t seem to lose its sparkle. Probably due to the music.
At just over 2 hours long it’s a night filled with Abba classics which will leave you feeling good. It’s a slow and quiet start which builds up to a party atmosphere by the end of the first half and you head to the interval with a smile, before coming back for more great music and fun in the second half.
I can’t help but think throughout the show how much this audience would pay to see Abba themselves on stage in concert. The reunion to trump all reunions I think. Sadly that won’t ever happen, but hearing all those iconic songs performed on stage is a big treat.
Listening to Abba for two hours is definitely uplifting, but watching the audience is as entertaining as the great show. Watch out for the waving arms, out of time clapping and squeals of delight when an oiled up guy appears on stage in his swimwear. Watch out for the very happy faces of an audience feeling nostalgic about a piece of their history or feeling blissfully happy with the story unfolding on stage.
A great show with a superb cast, including Northern Ireland’s Niamh Perry playing Sophie Sheridan.
Running at www.odysseyarena.com until Saturday 20th June.
