Steps star ‘H’ in Belfast for starring role as JOSEPH at Grand Opera House

Following the hit television series STEPS: On the Road Again and a subsequent sell-out arena tour, Ian ‘H’ Watkins has reprised the role of Joseph in the current UK tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He first played the role in London’s West End in 2005. This colourful retelling of the biblical story about Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours will run at the Grand Opera House from 22 to 26 October.

Having garnered sensational reviews, Bill Kenwright’s production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s popular family musical continues to enjoy huge success across the country and is in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest running touring musical of all time. Packed full of well-known hits, such as Jacob and Sons, Close Every Door and Any Dream Will Do, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat sings out to young and old alike.

Perhaps best known for being one fifth of the nineties pop phenomenon, STEPS, who produced eight albums and sold 20 million records worldwide, Ian went on to enjoy fame with fellow band mate Claire Richards and the pair released 3 top ten singles and the album Another You, Another Me, the title track of which was written for them by Benny and Bjorn from Abba. They also took over presenting the award-winning Saturday morning children’s show SM:TV.

Ian’s move to the world of musicals came post Steps after he graduated from The Royal Academy of Music, where his journey was followed by the 6 part series H Side Story on Channel 4. His theatre credits include he iconic role of The Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; Nick Piazza in Fame; Dave in Before Bristol; Michael in Erongenous Zones; Jeffery in Family Planning; Rupert in One O’Clock From The House; and Duncan in Rhinestone Mondays.

In May 2011 STEPS reunited for a documentary series entitled Steps: The Reunion which became the highest rated TV series of the year and saw their greatest hits album enter the charts in the No 1. spot. A second series entitled Steps: On The Road Again followed them on tour.
