Great balls of fire!

On 10th September 1813 a spectacular meteor shower occurred near Limerick, south-west Ireland – ‘The peals were very violent and continued for a considerable time, and were accompanied by some awful appearances; large fragments of atmospheric stones’.

Two hundred years on you can see one of these fragments, or meteorites, on display in the Nature Zone of the Ulster Museum. It has been loaned to the museum by the National Museum of Ireland, and here is Dr Mike Simms, Curator of Palaeontology, sizing it up…20130910-150133.jpg
