Aware Defeat Depression, which has offices in Belfast and Derry, is kicking off the summer season with a 5km or 10km Mood Walk on Friday 12 June at 6.30pm from Mary Peter’s Track, taking in the beautiful surroundings of Barnett Demesne.
I have roped in some of my girl pals to try and raise as much money as possible for the services and education programmes provided by Aware, and I’m thinking that if we talk when we walk we might even burn twice the calories! I came across Aware at the start of the year, when I was involved in promoting its mindfulness courses. I’m actually attending the 6-week course in the Ramada Shaw’s Bridge, starting on Wednesday 20 May and I’ll be keeping G Spots! readers up-to-date on what the programme involves.
Some famous faces have suffered with depression and it is never too far from our minds, in fact according to Aware, one in four people in Northern Ireland will experience a mental health problem each year. One well known local face who will be taking part in the Mood Walk is former UTV presenter, Lynda Bryans. She said, “I am delighted to be helping Aware Defeat Depression launch their Mood Walk fundraising event. Walking is one of the best ways to help boost your mood and your mental health and that is why Mood Walk is such an exciting and positive event.”
By doing the walk and raising funds, I know we will be making a real and positive difference to the lives of people affected by depression across Northern Ireland. The good news is that the event is not just about the walking; there will be lots of activities taking place to keep us entertained. I’m secretly hoping there will be sweet treats, as I can never say no to a tray bake and don’t you know that buns after exercise have no calories – well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
Registration for Mood Walk is £10 and for this you will receive a Mood Walk pack – including a Mood Walk t-shirt. Register at www.aware-ni.org/moodwalk or phone Kieran Hughes, Aware Defeat Depression Fundraising Officer on 02890357820 or @AwareNI
