Discover Belfast: ‘That Belfast Girl’ tells us her 5 favourite things in Belfast

This week we asked That Belfast Girl (Gemma-Louise Bond) to tell us her five favourite things about Belfast. Gemma-Louise blogs about fashion and beauty as well as what she’s been up to in Belfast on her popular blog which you can check out here.

Here goes with her top 5!

I have adored Avoca since a trip to Dublin years ago. So when our own branch opened up on Arthur Street, I was over-joyed. I love all of their homeware and really original Irish gifts but the real draw for me is the food! There are amazing cakes and pies to take home and I adore the restaurant upstairs. The BEST chips ever!

Queen’s University Belfast
My father used to take me to the Ulster Museum all the time as a child and I remember telling him that I would go to Queen’s when I was a “big girl”! I spent four amazing years at Queen’s studying Politics and doing my teacher training. Queen’s never ceases to amaze me- the buildings are so stunning and historic. On my graduation day I did cry because I realised I’d become part of a very special club.

I like Deanes in all its variations but have a particular love of Deane and Decano and Deane’s at Queen’s (where I dined on my first day of university… start as you mean to go on and all that!). I think Michael Deane is a real Northern Irish treasure. He has kept things simple, used local ingredients and ultimately this has allowed him to expand rather than fold like sadly so many restaurants had to during to recession. I’m so keen to go on the Deane’s Food Bus Tour- you eat a different course at a different Deane’s restaurant in Belfast. It sounds like great craic!!

There are very few music stores left so to have a local one is amazing. Located in Castlecourt, it does some great bargains and hard to find items. The staff are so lovely. If you are like me and like to collect vinyl, it’s a must visit.

Paddy McGurgan’s Make-Up Pro Store
If you are a beauty obsessed girl like me, Paddy’s shop is a complete haven. Paddy is one of NI’s most respected makeup artists- he even worked at Paris Fashion Week this year. His store stocks lots of brands that you won’t find anywhere else on the Island such as OCC, Makeup Studio and Mario Badescu. You also can book in for a makeup lesson or have your makeup done for a night out. The perfect shop for all beauty lovers but your purse will come out bit lighter!
