Today starts Mental Health Awareness week, so I thought it would be good chance to highlight upcoming events from mental health charity AWARE. Its popular ‘Mood Walks’ are taking place again in Belfast and Derry and the campaign was launched with the help of world champion boxer and Belfast lad, Michael Conlan.
He took time out from his busy training schedule for the Rio Olympics to lend his support and encourage sign ups to raise much needed funds for the charity. One in four people in Northern Ireland will suffer from depression in their lifetime and I’m sure most people reading this will know someone who has suffered from the illness.
I attended the event last year and it was such good fun, especially the pre-walk warm-up with hundreds of people in bright leg warmers, wigs and shorts, stretching and squatting with the help of personal trainer Gary Milligan!
Granted the weather helped keep us upbeat, so hopefully this year will be the same and it will be bigger and brighter than ever. Good news is you can walk or run the 5/10km route and as I went with a friend we just chatted all the way round.
The Belfast event kicks off on Friday 17 June from Mary Peters Track in South Belfast and the Derry event takes place on Friday 24 June from Ebrington Square. Cost is £10 (which includes your Mood Walk t-shirt) and you can sign up here.
Looking forwarding to seeing your event pics! Share them with us @BelfastTimes or @AWARENI
