Irish Landscapes in Watercolour.
Remember the TV series ‘Awash With Colour’ when local and national personalities were taught to paint by Tyrone artist Dermot Cavanagh? It was a great series and a lot of fun but it’s not just celebrities who flock to Dermot’s classes, he inspires budding artists from all walks of life either at his classes or the courses he holds throughout the UK and Ireland.
Although I was very proud of my two works of art inspired by this enthusiastic teacher and achieved over two days in Downings Co. Donegal, it’s not always possible to go on his trips or travel to his studios in The Moy. So now he’s coming to the pupil through his latest book, ‘Irish Landscapes in Colour’ in which he gives detailed instructions in simple and straight forward language. He’s a teacher to his fingertips and he makes it easy, especially as he includes five tracings of five different locations so you get the drawing over quickly and move on to the beauty of putting paint to paper. He gives a list of what’s needed before you start, paints brushes, paper, how best to fixing the tracing and transferring his drawing onto your paper.
The locations are interesting and will challenge any artist either using Dermot’s colour choice or your own and, as you can use the tracings over and over again, you can have a variety of finished artworks.
From your own armchair you can select your location – Glendalough, The Argory, Glencar Lake, the famous Singing Pub on the mountain road around the Atlantic Drive on the Rosguill Paninsula or Doo Lough in Connemara. It’s an adventure you’ll enjoy and Dermot assures me that we all have the ability to achieve a good painting if we keep him alongside either through the book or in person! And his tips are fascinating, did you know you can achieve light and shade on a tree trunk using penknife on paint or realistic rock formations using a credit card? You’ll be surprised by the techniques this man uses.
If you want to join him in person, Dermot is hosting three day painting courses at the Beach Hotel Downings in Donegal overlooking Sheephaven Bay.
These run 10th to 12th January £199 includes all art materials.
