#btreviews : Grainne McGarvey is Ravin’ about Maven

20140206-085041.jpgHello I’m Grainne McGarvey and welcome to my column which spots local hidden gems from the world of beauty, health, fashion and hospitality. I will have my nose to the ground (quite literally) to keep you up to date about the new or interesting products and services from our neck of the woods.

I must confess; I’m more of a clothes shopper than a furniture shopper, so I had slight reservations making a trip to Maven – a new furniture and homeware store just off Belfast’s Lisburn Road (down the side of Templeton Robinson)

Thankfully it’s designed more like an upmarket fashion boutique, rather than the dreaded Swedish giant that strikes me with fear when I have the misfortune to visit.

A pretty exterior is always a tick in my book and sure enough the little trees out the front make it a lot more approachable.

There is a good mix of everything inside – contemporary cushions, lamps kitchen chairs and textiles, not to mention a moose’s head, but thankfully that’s just for display.

The retail business is on the ground floor and the interior business is on the first – did I mention that the talented Maven team can make your house looking as fabulous as their shop? The business is run by two sisters, Catherine and Patricia McGinnis, who offer a bespoke design service, which is available to anyone no matter the budget. The girls believe that hiring an interior designer can in fact save you money by avoiding costly mistakes.

Here are a few things which stood out for me:
• Cute cards for every occasion, the ‘thank you for dinner’ ones are my favourite
• Parlour lighting by Donna Bates – think upmarket milk jars – inspired by Donna’s early days growing up on a farm in County Derry
• Ferm living products – Maven is the only Irish retailer to stock this range and the kids cushions are so cute you’ll probably end up keeping them for your own room
• Saint Maren handmade bath products – lovely packaging and smell great

Granted, Maven is still finding its feet, but as more of us are making home improvements, it has all the elements needed to be a huge success. Based on the buzz when I visited the shop, it appears the Lisburn/Malone set (myself included) have already embraced it into the hearts, and homes.
