Bread and Sandwiches for National Sandwich Month

August is National Sandwich Month and last week was National Bread Week, so with a little help from Marks and Spencer and the traders of my weekend workplace, St George’s Market, it seems I got fully on board with the theme and embraced bread and sandwiches.

On Thursday 24th August we went on a Game of Thrones tour with McCombs (more on that on a separate blog later) and arrived on the coach armed with a selection of sandwiches and desserts from M&S. The tour is a full day trip from 9am until 7pm, and with lots of walking (6.5 miles!) we needed to be prepared. Very prepared!

A quick trip to my local M&S on Wednesday night and boom, GoT day trip picnic sorted from the Spirit of Summer range. That included sandwiches, crisps and a few sweet treats.

The Spirit of Summer sandwich range is very Italian themed this year with Chicken & Chorizo wraps, Italian meatball ciabatta, Sicilian Lemon Chicken Focaccia and Chicken Caponata Piadina. I tried out the delicious Chicken & Chorizo wrap, and where better to enjoy it than on the rocks of the awesome Giant’s Causeway!

As well a unique sandwiches, M&S have introduced Mediterranean themed Spirit of Summer desserts, crisps and confectionary. With Portuguese Egg Custard Tarts and Peach & Raspberry Traybakes amongst the choice this year, there’s definitely something for everyone to choose from.

After our Causeway sandwiches, it was on to Carrick-a-rede rope bridge for dessert, Chocolate Orange Eclair. What a treat!

On my next visit to our local store, I have my eyes on the delicious sounding Pistachio & Cherry Tarts.

Meanwhile at St George’s Market, if you want fresh bread, this is the place to visit with some award winning bakers selling the best breads. With Guinness Wheaten, Bacon & Cheese potato breads, scones from Yellow Door and the usual soda breads, there’s plenty to keep your bread cravings satisfied. I know mine are this month, hence the need to up my exercise game with more walks on the beach and a few runs to shake it all off.

Happy carb loading!
