If you were forced to describe today’s Belfast Pride in one word, that word would be ‘colourful’.
As Pride celebrated it’s 21st birthday party, I could only think how things have progressed for the City as a whole in those years. But for Pride, 21 years ago, only a handful of people took part in the parade and support would have been limited. Now, as the event celebrates another year, it is the largest Pride in Ireland and was supported by thousands of people participating and even more lining the streets.
At 2pm the parade kicked off from Custom House Square and partied it’s way around the City before arriving back in the square for 4 hours of entertainment. There was a constant stream of performers, but stand outs for us were the amazing Big Spender and the Divas, Starboy Nathan, and Lisa Scott Lee. But let’s not forget the brilliant Cubstars, Tina Leg Tantrum and Rusty Hinges and many more. The Party in the Square was certainly that, but it kind of ran out of steam after six o’clock and a lot of people left. By the time Lisa came on at 7pm, the crowd was a mere shadow of it’s former self. But what a day, great weather, great crowds, great atmosphere, great for Belfast.
Basically, everything about it was colourful, from the rainbow flags to what people wore, from the parade floats to the stage performers. Pride did the Belfast proud.
