This week I wanted to write about a fab new concept which is coming to Belfast from Dublin – the Beauty Bootcamp. The one-day, one-stop-shop make up, beauty and hair courses were founded by RTE and TV3 beauty guru Liz Dwyer who launched the programme in Belfast last week – to much celebration from Belfast’s beauty aficionados.
Throughout her career, Liz was so impressed by the transformation of models and celebrities into the glamorous vixens we see on the catwalks and on screen (thanks to clever hair and make-up techniques she witnessed behind the scenes), that she decided all women should have a chance to get in on the act. So she set up Beauty Bootcamp back in 2007 in her home town of Dublin, using a team of international make-up artists and hair stylists with a very clear mission statement: to teach regular women how to apply their makeup like a pro, style their hair like a red-carpet regular and to impart all the backstage tricks and insider tips to boot.
Her one-day workshop covers everything from the basics to high glam and follows a hands-on format. The tutors demonstrate a specific make-up or hairstyling technique, and the class replicates each step on themselves until they complete a look, as Liz feels, “this is the only way to really grasp a new method and be able to do it yourself at home.”
All the latest and greatest cosmetics and pro essentials are provided for clients’ use in the course, and this unique beauty playground environment serves as the perfect backdrop for a fun girls’ day out. Better yet, attendees also have the added advantage of being all glammed up and ready for Saturday night.
Almost 30 percent of Beauty Bootcamp’s clients in the past eight years have travelled down from Northern Ireland to attend a course, so Liz felt it was high time to bring the experts and backstage experience up north to them instead. The Belfast dates are: 13, 27 February; 05, 19 March and 02, 16 and 30 April

Like me, Liz and her team love a covetable beauty product or two – so here are some of this week’s recommendations:
I love the Givenchy Vax in the City range and these serums, one for eyes and one for face, are a fantastic way to rejuvenate your skin with a quick detox.
Tried over the chilly autumnal months, the face serum was light to apply and fresh to touch. I love the metallic packaging and fresh green touch on the logo too.
Clarins has revamped its classic Multi Active Day and Night creams – the day cream was one of my first ever ‘grown up’ moisturisers when I was at university and I still love the delicate scent of the product. These stapes – which are made from the very best plant extracts – are available from Debenhams at CastleCourt as well as House of Fraser and counters nationwide.
My wow product this week is a Christian Louboutin lipstick. Using his iconic heels as something of a muse for the packaging, the ‘taillon’ (as the French would say) shape is super sexy, and the rich gold or black outer shell makes for one luxurious product, almost as covetable as the heels this genius house designs.
