Baseball Ireland new season update by Neil Boyd

This Sunday, the Belfast Northstars take the field in their home opener vs. the Ashbourne Giants as the Baseball Ireland season kicks into gear.

It has been a busy offseason for Belfasts’ representative in the league as they have worked on recruiting new players to the growing sport through a series of ‘Open Practices’ across the boroughs.

We’ve managed to recruit a few new players over the winter, both with previous experience and without; it will give both our ‘A’ and ‘B’ squads real depth. It will be interesting to see how they fit into the existing team.

Two of the new players to suit up in the maroon and gold this year are catcher Chris Smith and pitcher Melvyn Woods, the latter joining his brother, and current A team rookie of the year Colin in the Northstars lineup.

We picked up Chris from the Lisburn open practice, he brings experience from his time playing in high school in Seattle, as well as a great competitive streak. Melvyn has great natural velocity in his pitches. We’re looking forward to the Woods brothers becoming a true 1-2 punch for us.

The Ashbourne Giants are in their first year in Baseball Ireland, a youth team that has come of age and is ready to enter the senior setup. They are run by Sean Mitchell, the former Dublin Spartan.

It’s a double header, starting at 11:30 and 14:00 at Henry Jones Memorial Field in Castlereagh.
