The last number of years has seen the eyes of the world on Northern Ireland so it has come as no surprise that it has been named as one of the Top 10 European Travel Destinations for 2013 by Lonely Planet.
In its latest list of top European destinations published this week (June 18), Lonely Planet said: ‘Scenic, historic and on the rise: Northern Ireland is ripe for exploration in 2013’ and that when in Derry~Londonderry, ‘a walk around the walls is a must for any visitor.’
NITB’s Destination PR Officer, Pauline Gormley, said: “We are delighted that Northern Ireland has been recognised as one of the top 10 European Travel Destinations for 2013 by Lonely Planet, which is the largest travel guide publisher in the world. Our tourism industry is thriving and we have had an incredible couple of years.
“This week County Fermanagh hosted the hugely successful G8 World Leaders Summit which also saw President Obama and the First Lady visiting Belfast for the first time. In addition to this, Derry~Londonderry is the first ever UK City of Culture and Belfast is hosting the World Police and Fire Games.
“This follows a tremendous 2012 which was a huge year for tourism in Northern Ireland with a number of world-class events including the Irish Open, MTV, Titanic commemorations and the Clipper Homecoming Festival as well as the opening of key visitor attractions including the £97m signature building Titanic Belfast, the world’s largest Titanic exhibition and the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre,” Pauline continued.
“There are so many events and attractions in Northern Ireland there really is something to suit everyone so we are encouraging people to take Lonely Planet’s advice and explore more of what’s on their doorstep,” Pauline added.
Andy Murdock, Lonely Planet’s US Digital Editor said: “Size isn’t everything: Europe is just one quarter the size of Asia, one third the size of Africa, but its pull for travellers is unmatched around the world. Our editors, wide-roaming authors and local experts pitched in and crafted this list: Lonely Planet’s Top 10 European Destinations for 2013, the ten places we think travellers should be heading in Europe right now.”
And there you go! What we always knew….. we are brilliant!!
