An Autumn break at Galgorm resort and spa
Every so often you need a break away from your every day stresses and just go somewhere to totally chill out. We did just that when we headed up to Galgorm Resort and Spa to enjoy a day in their recently extended spa and an evening relaxing in the hotel.
It’s easy enough to get to this award winning resort from Belfast, just head north and turn off at Galgorm. You’ll drive through Galgorm town and arrive at a beautiful country estate with views over the River Maine.
Checking in was an easy process and the doorman set the standard for the level of service we received during our one night break, it was beyond excellent!
Once we’d checked in it was time for a pre spa nibble in the beautiful conservatory. Rather than a full afternoon tea, which at a residents rate of £16 is good value, we just opted for a tea and cupcake. Bliss.
Then it was Thermal Spa Village time.
What a spa!
It’s very much outdoor focused so be prepared for a bit of a chill round your legs as you move between areas, but it’s refreshingly different, spacious and has a very relaxed vibe going on as guests are outside wandering around in their robes and slippers. I’ve never visited a spa before where they have a map, and to be fair, when you first arrive, you kind of need it.
Our spa highlight was an hour relaxing in the private and secluded hot tubs available to hire on the riverbank. For £80, two people can enjoy the ultimate chill out with a small bottle of champagne and canapés overlooking the river, surrounded by countryside and wildlife. We sat in our tub mesmerised by the river and the solitary heron on the far bank fishing for dinner. Truly magical and the ultimate treat.
During our spa afternoon we chilled in the Orangery, got invigorated standing in the snow cabin, relaxed by the hydrotherapy pool, had a swim in the main pool and generally de-stressed and soaked up the atmosphere. It seems spa days at Galgorm are popular as there were a number of what looked like ‘hen’ groups in, and quite a few young couples, probably newly married. It was busy, but not crowded, and definitely relaxing.
Later that evening we went to Gillies for dinner. What a beautiful looking restaurant; it looked like a great hall or converted barn with huge ceilings and cow paintings everywhere. The food is traditional country casual with good sized portions. A hearty filling dinner after a day relaxing in the spa.
After a great nights sleep, breakfast in the River Room was another delight. A buffet of continental style breakfast was followed up with a freshly cooked made to order hot breakfast with quality ingredients. The room itself was elegant and tasteful, and as was standard for the whole complex, the staff were perfection.
To finish off a blissful rest, we heard there was an accident out on the main route to Belfast; so we relaxed beside the log fire in the lounge reading newspapers for an hour or so. A great end to a relaxing Autumn break in Galgorm Resort and Spa.
